Shipping from China to Switzerland: Complete Guide | 2022

Shipping from China to Switzerland: Complete Guide | 2022

Imports from China to Switzerland have more than doubled over the past ten years and are still increasing. China is currently Switzerland’s third biggest trading partner, with over $19.78 billion of goods imported in 2021.

Many importers and businesses have been looking to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement between China and Switzerland because of the significantly reduced customs taxes.

If you’re one of such importers, you’re in the right place. This article will provide information on the best shipping solutions from China to Switzerland, the cost implications, the advantages and disadvantages of shipping services, and the customs clearances to prepare for.

Ultimately, importers would have a comprehensive, step-by-step delivery service guide that answers all questions about express, rail, air, or sea shipping from China to Switzerland.

How to Ship from China to Switzerland

How to Ship from China to Switzerland

Importers from China to Switzerland have four standard shipping options to choose from. They include Express, air, rail, and sea freight. Let’s explore each of these methods.

Ocean freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Ocean freight shipping from China to Switzerland

The most popular method of transporting goods from China to Switzerland is by ocean freight, primarily due to its adaptability and reliability.

Because Switzerland is a landlocked nation, most containers must be delivered to other European ports like Antwerp(Belgium), Hamburg(Germany), and Genoa(Italy) before being sent by river, rail, or truck into Switzerland. Containers from China to Switzerland are sent on barges to the river port of Basel, along the Rhine river, from where they can be distributed to other sub-container ports.

The main drawback of ocean freight is how long it takes; other shipping methods can deliver cargo in a matter of days, but sea freight takes weeks.

Ocean freight uses containers and operates under two different container systems, which are explained below.

LCL shipping from China to Switzerland

LCL shipments stand for less than container load shipments. In LCL sea shipping, goods from different importers are combined in a container, with each importer paying only for the space their goods occupy.

LCL freight shipping is simple; you contact a freight forwarder and provide them with the necessary information. Once the freight forwarder has determined your required space, they will reserve it for you.

LCL shipments work best for small freights or cargo between 1 and 15 cubic meters that don’t require a full container space.

FCL shipping from China to Switzerland

FCL shipments, also known as “full container loads,” are one way to ship goods from China to Switzerland by sea. In FCL sea shipping, an importer purchases an entire container and fills it with goods.

Even though the container was made to hold large shipments, your cargo does not need to fill it completely when shipping by full container load; in some cases, shipping a half-container using FCL rather than LCL is more cost-effective.

You can check out our article here to learn more about FCL and LCL sea shipping, cargo optimization, and calculating the volume of goods.

How much does it cost for Ocean freight from China to Switzerland?

The cost of ocean freight depends on the method of sea shipping, the size of containers used, the arrival and departure ports, and the shipping carriers used.

Table 1

How long does Sea freight shipping from China to Switzerland take?

Sea freight is the slowest way of shipping from China to Switzerland. It depends on the cargo type, the shipping carrier used, and the specific arrival and departure ports.

Generally, with FCL shipping, containers arrive within 30-34 days and within 35-40 days for LCL shipping. This results from the longer time taken for consolidation and deconsolidation of LCL shipments.

Importers should also note that there might be shipping or customs delays that may prolong this shipping estimate.

Air freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Air freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Air freight is a form of shipping cargo through air freight carriers or airlines. Switzerland has well-developed cargo airports that can receive air freight from countries worldwide, especially China. It is a more cost-effective alternative to express goods shipping and is relatively fast.

Air freight is the best option when shipping urgent, relatively high-value, but not necessarily large, cargo from China to Switzerland.

Two advantages of air shipping that shouldn’t be disregarded are its greater scheduling flexibility and controllable goods flow.

How much does it cost for Air freight from China to Switzerland?

Although air freight may be the most convenient method of shipping goods from China to Switzerland, it is not the cheapest.

The price of air freight in Switzerland shipping comprises several fees and surcharges, such as the air freight charge, fuel surcharge, security fee, terminal fee, and other fees. These fees are set by airlines based on their operating costs, and they vary frequently; hence you need to get a quote on time.

Air cargo shipping from China to Switzerland costs about $6.7-$12 per kg when all charges have been included.

The higher the weight you’re shipping with air freight, the lesser the cost per kg, as seen in the table below.

How long does Air freight shipping from China to Switzerland take?

Air freight from China to Switzerland is the second quickest shipping method after express freight. There are also options to get goods delivered faster but at higher costs.

Generally, air freight transit time from China to Switzerland is about 4 to 7 days when transported from Shenzhen/Shanghai to Zurich or Basel.

Rail freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Rail freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Rail freight has begun to gain traction as a great way of transporting cargo from China to Stockholm, Switzerland. Apart from offering a variety when shipping products, it is also seen as a fantastic alternative to other modes of shipping.

A new silk express rail link road connecting China to Europe has greatly changed how freight is transported between the continents.

Regarding cost and transit time, rail freight can be a good compromise between air and sea shipping because it is cheaper than air freight and about 15 days faster than the ocean freight.

There is currently no direct rail shipping route from China to Switzerland, so trains pass first through the German stations of Nuremberg, Hamburg, and Duisburg. Then the containers are transported from these stations to Basel, Switzerland, by rail or road.

Express freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Express freight shipping from China to Switzerland

Express shipping is fast and flexible service. DHL, UPS, and FedEx are the biggest international courier services that ship from China to Switzerland. You can feel secure knowing that your belongings are traveling quickly to their destination because they all have solid reputations for dependability. It is also a door-to-door shipping solution, which saves importers so much stress and hassles.

How is my freight weight calculated for shipping from China To Switzerland?

Also, there are two different ways to calculate freight costs: volumetric and gross weight-based. Air freight calculates their fees both ways; then, they take the heavier one to maximize revenue.

For instance, if your parcel measures 100x100x50 cm and weighs 80 kg in total, the airline will divide the total volume of the parcel dimensions by 6000, i.e.,600,000 cubic centimeters. In this case, since the volumetric weight is 84KG > gross weight of 80kg, the airline will charge for the volumetric weight of 84kg instead of 80kg.

On the flip side, if the package dimensions are 250,000 cubic centimeters, the volumetric weight would be 42 kg. In this case, the airline would charge for the gross weight because it is greater than the volumetric weight.

Note that the divisor in express air freight is 5000. The divisor is 6000 for both standard air and ocean freight.)

What is Chargeable weight & Volumetric weight & Actual weight?

Many people have found it challenging to calculate freight weight because they don’t know what they need to do.

You must first determine the actual weight of the package you send before determining its volumetric weight.

If the volumetric weight is greater than the actual weight, the volumetric weight becomes your freight weight; if the actual weight is greater than the volumetric weight, the actual weight becomes your freight weight.

Chargeable weight calculation method

For example, if you have 6 boxes, each of the exact dimensions and weight of 30kg, then the total weight of your package would be 180kg.

Case 1: Actual Weight > Volumetric Weight

In the first scenario, there are six identical boxes, each measuring 0.5 meters in length, 0.375 meters in width, and 1 meter in height.

Multiplying them yields the volume per box: 0.5 x 0.375 x 1 = 0.15 cubic meters.

Therefore, the total volume of the 6 boxes will be 0.15 x 6 = 0.9 cubic meters.

It is known already that one cubic meter of space in a container has a volumetric weight of 167 kg. To calculate the volumetric weight of 0.9 cubic meters, multiply 0.9 by 167, which equals 150.3 kg.

As you can see, the actual weight of 180 kg is significantly higher than the calculated weight of 150.3 kg; as a result, the freight weight for shipping goods from China to Switzerland is 180 kg.

Case 2: Volumetric Weight > Actual weight

Here, let’s assume the box has the following measurements for the box: 0.5 meters long, 0.375 meters wide, and 1 meter high.

Therefore, the box has a volume of 0.5 x 0.375 x 1 = 0.1875 cubic meters.

Therefore, 0.1875 x 6=1.125 cubic meters is the total volume of the six boxes.

1.125 x 167 = 187.875 kg is the volumetric weight for 1.125 cubic meters.

Here, you can see that the actual weight is less than the volumetric weight; consequently, your freight charge weight in this case, is 187.875 kg.

You can calculate the chargeable weight of your package with this method.

Total rate = Rate per kg x gross weight.

How much does it cost to ship to Switzerland from China?

How much does it cost for air freight from China to France?

Air shipping from China to Switzerland costs about $11-$15 per kg when all charges have been included. The higher the weight you’re shipping with air freight, the lesser the cost per kg, as seen in the table below.

Rail shipping from China to Switzerland is more expensive than air shipping but less expensive than sea shipping. For a distance of 8,000 km, the price will be about $80 per cubic meter, with a transit time of just over two weeks.

Although costs can vary depending on the season, an FCL full container load that travels by rail from China to Europe typically costs around $10,000.

On the other hand, the average price of rail freight for LCL goods, including customs and duty fees, is $2/kg. Rail freight logistics can be streamlined with the assistance of freight forwarders who deliver cargo door to door but at a higher cost.

How much does it cost for Express shipping from China to Switzerland?

The cost of Express freight from China to Switzerland is determined by the goods shipped, their weight, and the packaging size.

Generally, you should pay between $5 to $10 per kg for express shipping from China to Switzerland.

What is the best way to ship from China to Switzerland?

What is the best way to ship from China to Switzerland?

Choosing between air, rail, and sea freight can sometimes confuse importers. On the one hand, air freight is way faster than sea freight; on the other hand, sea freight is much cheaper than air freight. Rail freight is somewhere in between.

Selecting the best option depends on certain factors. They include:

  • The type and size of goods

  • The urgency or time-sensitivity of the goods, e.g., perishable goods, require door-to-door air freight shipping.

  • The shipping budget of the importer

Generally, it is way more economical to ship with sea freight when shipping bulky goods, despite the long transit time. The importer may also want to consider rail freight if the delivery is needed faster. Air freight should be your go-to option for relatively smaller cargo, especially as it involves fewer customs stress and cheaper insurance premiums.

Customs clearing in both Countries.

Customs clearing in both Countries.

The process of importing commodities into Switzerland requires specific procedures and processes that must be accounted for to ensure duties, tariffs, and taxes incurred during the shipping process are easily settled.

Switzerland has a unique system for calculating customs clearance because it considers both weight and product (as opposed to most other nations, which base amounts on both value and product). There is a harmonized system to determine the tariff type of products. This is called the HS code, which stands for Harmonized System. The HS code of a given product greatly influences the Custom duty, and you should check with your freight forwarder to get accurate estimates for your product.

Like the EU nations, Switzerland also calculates customs clearance using the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) valuation method.

CIF value is calculated as follows: cargo insurance; cost of the goods; cost of export clearance; cost of transportation to the port of departure; and cost of transportation to Switzerland’s point of entry

Customs clearance in Switzerland takes 1-2 days after arrival at the port. You must present the customs documents as soon as the goods arrive to go through certification. Following that, the cargo will undergo inspection before being allowed entry into the nation.

You must also consider taxes such as VAT, transit clearance, and customs fees when importing goods into Switzerland.

It is always preferable to have experts like freight forwarders handle your customs obligations in international freight. Your freight forwarder will let you know how much duty you must pay in China and Switzerland, so you can include it in your shipping budget.

Import taxes from China to Switzerland?

Import taxes from China to Switzerland

You must pay import taxes when importing items into Switzerland. The origin country and the type of goods will determine how much duty must be paid.

Switzerland and China agreed on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2013, which outlines the requirements that must be met in order to import goods from China.

This Free trade agreement has caused a massive rate cut on most goods imported from China to Switzerland. An importer must have a certificate of origin to take advantage of this agreement.

In Switzerland, the standard duty rate on imported goods is between 6% and 7%, and there are certain goods with no import tax or duty. The average VAT rate in Switzerland is 7.7 percent.

The amount paid depends on the goods being imported. You can check here for more information about swiss tariffs.

Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Chinese and Swiss trade laws is essential to know the costs, customs clearance and taxes you can anticipate. This will avoid unpleasant and costly surprises during shipping and lessen the likelihood of problems with customs.

Even better, let your freight forwarder help sort out your import duties.
